Chapter 300 Love is Bitter
The person lying in bed had a burn that extended from the right side of their face all the way to the neck, covered by a large area of burnt skin. It had been treated and medicated, but it couldn’t hide the grim scars. Burns were different from cuts and scrapes; they killed the skin cells, leaving behind unsightly marks even after healing. However, with advanced medical technology, skin graft surgeries had become highly sophisticated. With plastic surgery, her appearance could almost be restored to its original state.
The dilemma was that Freya was currently pregnant. To undergo the surgery, she would need antibiotic medication, which would require terminating the pregnancy. Even if she didn’t terminate, the medication could cause incomplete or deformed embryonic development, or even result in a miscarriage.
“You can still have another child…” Sivin tried to persuade her.
Freya kept her eyes open, her unfocused gaze fixed on the ceiling, the bright lights making her dizzy. She closed her eyes and said, “I won’t have the surgery. Perhaps, amidst this devastating explosion, the heavens wanted me to survive, maybe to protect the little life inside me.”Exclusive content from NôvelDrama.Org.
When she fell into the river, the suicide bomb vest she was wearing had slipped off her body. She fell into the water first, and only then did the bomb explode. The burns on her face were caused by the impact of the bomb, burning in the water. Though she was injured, she was fortunate enough to survive. And now, did her appearance really matter to her?
A woman’s beauty is for herself.
Who did she need to impress? Who did she need to please?
Sivin sighed, “I can imagine Elijah must be devastated by your death.”
“He’s probably mourning the loss of his child’s mother, not me,” she replied in a cold voice.
Gone was her former vitality and passion.
Elijah’s words made her feel like all the emotions and love she had invested had become a joke.
“These burns on my face will heal in about three to five days, but I don’t want to drag it out. Help me book a flight for three days from now,” she looked at Sivin. “Thank you for keeping a spot for me at the Mede Heart Research Center.”
She now had a place to go.
“Oh, I’ll take care of that for you. After all, you helped me with Eric Lowe’s situation, so I’ll do my best to help you with yours,” he looked at Freya and expressed his concern. “I’m just worried that the body won’t fool Elijah. If he discovers anything…”
“He shouldn’t be able to. He was at the scene and knows the force of the explosion. The bomb was strapped to me, so finding a body should be unexpected for him. He probably thinks I was blown to pieces,” Freya said.
Sivin replied, “When you were brought in, there was a complete body, so we need a complete body as well. Otherwise, his subordinates will become suspicious.”
“Thank you for finding such a suitable body,” Freya said.
“It was fortunate. There was a fire at the orphanage in the northern part of the city, and five people died, including a woman who had a similar height and weight to you. She had extensive burns that could cover up any traces on your body. As long as Elijah doesn’t test the DNA, he won’t find out that it’s not you.”
“Oh, speaking of which, this is something I found for you. Your child and your mother have been rescued. Look at this video of Elijah’s subordinates bringing your child to the hospital. Take a look,” Sivin secretly recorded the video and showed it to Freya.
Because of the distance, she couldn’t see Kain clearly.
But Freya could recognize his cry and his face. The thought of leaving her child, of not being able to see him easily in the future, felt like a hook piercing her heart, tearing it apart and making it hard to breathe.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…” she apologized to her child.
She felt unworthy of being a mother.
Tears rolled down her cheeks like water droplets, falling into her hair.
Sivin sighed, “Why do you have to do this to yourself?”
Freya clenched her lips, “He’ll be with Elijah. Elijah will surely take good care of him, provide him with a better life and education than I ever could…”
“What I mean is, you don’t really have to leave. Now that you have a child, Elijah won’t pursue the Joan Nash incident anymore…”
“Dr Peters, have you ever been in love?” Freya interrupted him.
Sivin answered, “My relationship with my wife is pretty good…”
“Have you ever experienced loving someone and thinking they loved you back, only to be told that they actually didn’t love you? That feeling of falling from heaven to hell?”
Sivin furrowed his brow, “Is love really that complicated?”
Freya said bitterly, “I didn’t know before, but now I do. Loving someone is bitter.”
The operating room door suddenly opened.
Sivin turned around and saw the person, his face turning pale as a sheet.
