Chapter 44 Watching Every Step
Chapter 44 Watching Every Step
Liam’s answer pierced through Mia’s heart like a dagger. She couldn’t believe that her fiancé knew
about the menstrual cycle of another woman so well!
Mia could hardly maintain the smile on her face. She was clenching her fists so tightly that her nails
were cutting into her palms. Still, she managed to ask Liam with a smile, “Liam, why do you know
something so private to Ms. Currie?”
Liam noticed the hard edge in her voice. After glancing at Amber, who was looking like a cat on a hot
tin roof, he answered with great composure, “I learned it by chance.”
His answer was not helpful at all. However, Mia did not probe knowing how Liam hated to be pestered
with too many questions. Instead, she turned to look daggers at Amber.
Amber looked awkward and completely at a loss. She would suspect that everything was Liam’s plan to
turn Mia against her if he did not look so innocuous at the moment.
Unable to put up with the tension, Amber grabbed her backpack hurriedly and said, “I’ve got to go.”
She was too desperate to leave the diner that she couldn’t bother to care about manners. Then, she
fought the blustery wind and ran back to the apartment.
She opened the door to the apartment and found Mia’s hat hanging on the rack, her designer high
heels kept inside the shoe cabinet, and her lingering scent in the air. All of those things made her feel
awful.
To her dismay, Amber realized that she had become a third wheel who had shamelessly sabotaged
Mia’s relationship with Liam.
While they were still outside, she quickly took a shower in the bathroom and then retreated to her room.
She balked at the prospect of bumping into them, so she was doing everything she could to prevent
that from happening.
After Amber was gone, none of Mia and Liam spoke while waiting for the waitress to fetch them their
bill. The atmosphere at the table couldn’t be more awkward. Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.
Mia was so disheartened that she was on the brink of bursting into tears. She had no idea what she
had done wrong to deserve such treatment. As a woman who had been in love with Liam for years, she
couldn’t accept the fact that she was defeated by a woman whom Liam had only known for less than a
month.
The possibility that Liam might cheat on her had never occurred to her. It was because she had always
considered herself his perfect match in terms of her appearance, her education, her family background,
and her personality.
Liam had never spent much time mingling with women because his career and friends came first.
However, things had changed drastically after he met Amber.
Liam knew Mia was upset, but he was never fond of offering explanations. After a moment of silence,
he patted her hands and said, “Mia, there’s nothing between Amber and me.” He said it half-heartedly.
Did he speak the truth? Even Liam did not have a sure answer to that question. At that moment, he
was not in the mood for some deep soul-searching.
Mia was a woman with good emotional intelligence. Since Liam had given her an out, she did not
hesitate to take it and act accordingly. “Liam, I admit I was jealous and a little bit annoyed just now. But
now, I’ve decided to trust you,” she said.
Mia knew that she would give Liam a sense of accomplishment by telling him that he had her trust.
Also, that would make him feel more guilty whenever he was going to do something that could let her
down.
After paying for the meal, they walked out of the diner. “Liam, I feel like catching a movie. Let’s do it
together,” Mia suggested in a kittenish tone.
She had to occupy all his free time so that he would have no chance to be with Amber.
“Mia, I think we should maintain a distance from each other for the time being. We don’t want the
paparazzi to catch us being close to each other, do we?” Liam brushed her arm off his and said
apologetically, “I’m sorry, I can’t watch the movie with you because I need to head back to the office.
Why don’t we do it tomorrow night? I’ll reserve the entire cinema just for the two of us.”
Mia puckered her lips in dissatisfaction. “You’re right. The paparazzi are so annoying. Can’t you just
terminate the agreement with Amber earlier?”
Liam shook his head. “Mia, the deal I’m having with Amber isn’t as simple as you might think. I have to
watch my every move now because my situation is still pretty precarious at the moment. I’m only able
to end the deal with Amber after my company finished the process of corporate restructuring.”
Looking at his handsome side-profile, Mia nodded dispiritedly. “I understand.”
“Mia, here’s the thing.” Liam stared solemnly into her eyes and said, “Amber will start appearing as my
fiancée in public more frequently in the coming months. So, you have to be mentally prepared for that.”
“Liam, I understand. I’ll wait for you.” Mia nodded with tears in her eyes.
Liam let out a sigh. “I know it must be tough for you,” he said while caressing her face.
