Chapter 183
Finally, the long call was over. Rosalie said, “What did your mother say to you? You look like you’re suffering, and you even mentioned the ‘kneeling on the keyboard’ part.”
“What else could it be? It’s about arranged marriage.” Lillian rolled his eyes and said, “My mom said he’s a hot commodity and she fought hard to snatch him away from other aunties. She wants me to meet him first.”
Lillian couldn’t make sense of her mom’s thinking.
It seemed like her mother believed that if she didn’t get married in the next couple of years, she might remain single for the rest of her life.
“Then why don’t you go meet him? Consider it an opportunity,” Rosalie suggested after some thought.
“No, I’m already overwhelmed as it is. Another blind date, and I might lose my mind.” Lillian was about to spit blood whenever she thought of her mother’s constant pressure to date.
“What’s bothering you? Is there something else?” Rosalie asked.
Lillian looked at his friend and said, “What if I told you that I’m currently dating Callum? Would you be surprised?” Rosalie nearly choked on her own saliva. “You’re dating Callum? But didn’t you say he wanted to get revenge on you?”
“Yes, he does want revenge.” Lillian nodded.
“Then why…”
“Maybe he wants to start dating first, wait until I fall in love with him, and then throw me to the ground to taste the bitterness of going from heaven to hell, just like they do on TV,” Lillian said..
“But the question remained: would Callum really seek revenge in such a childish manner?” Rosalie doubted, especially since she had heard from Jonathan that Callum was ruthless. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have inherited the White family as an illegitimate child and become the head of the family.
Callum even dominated his father’s original wife and her two sons.
“Do you really think that’s the case?” Rosalie said.
“What other possibilities are there?” Lillian shrugged. “Anyway, I’ve thought it through. If he wants to take revenge like that, let him. I’ll-date him for a few months, pretend to fall in love, and when he finally abandons me, I’ll perform a heartbroken act. This way, he’ll vent his anger, and maybe he’ll let me go.”
Rendered speechless, Rosalie was starting to admire her friend’s thinking. “Could someone like Callum really be fooled by such a charade?” she wondered.
This man had probably encountered countless deceptions and conspiracies throughout his life. He must have developed a keen sense of discernment by now.
“Have you ever considered that he might actually have feelings for you?” Rosalie hesitated for a moment, remembering the time she saw Callum gazing at her friend through the glass window, as well as their encounter/when she and Jonathan went to the White family mansion to pick her up.
Although Callum had used the method of “kidnapping” to bring Lillian to the villa, she had emerged unscathed in the end.
If Callum really intended to seek revenge, Lillian’s fate would likely be much worse.
After all, Lillian had not experienced too much darkness in her life. Unlike her, who had seen too much darkness in prison, sometimes to the point where she didn’t even have the strength to cry.
“Pfft!” Lillian spat out the pudding she had in her mouth, then quickly wiped it away with a tissue before turning to Rosalie. “Rosalie, you should save your jokes for when I’m not eating. This one is just too big.”
“I mean it,” Rosalie said.
The two of them stared at each other for a while, and then Lillian chuckled and said, “If he really has feelings for me, it wouldn’t work out, anyway. Think about what kind of family the White family is. If I really got together with him, my life would turn into a fight within a wealthy family. With my abilities, I’d probably be crushed in no time.”
Hence, she figured it was best not to think about it. Once she had paid off her “debt” to Callum, she would be free.
“Let’s not talk about this anymore. By the way, you mentioned you found a new job before. How’s it going? Is it okay?” Lillian changed the topic.
“It’s not bad. It’s a small diner, and I make 1,200 dollars a month. It’s not much, but my boss is nice, and I get along with the other staff there,” Rosalie said.
“That’s good, but this job isn’t a long-term solution. You’re so smart. Have you thought about getting some other certifications so you can do a different kind of work in the future?” Lillian asked.
Rosalie smiled bitterly. “I can’t even get a job as a front desk clerk. Even if I manage to get some certifications, it probably wouldn’t make much of a difference.”
Lillian was dumbfounded. In the end, it was because of her friend’s criminal record. The only way out was to clear her
name.
“I’ll keep a close eye on that witness we talked about last time. The private detective said that in a little while, he might be able to find some substantial evidence. When we have that evidence, we can go to Sloummont and clarify things,” Lillian said.
“Okay.” Rosalie was grateful to see this friend who had been with her all the way since her troubles began. Only Lillian believed in her innocence, even when everyone else believed she was guilty. Property of Nô)(velDr(a)ma.Org.
“You don’t have to thank me. You’re being too polite!” Lillian joked. “I’m counting on you to make a fortune after you clear your name. When the time comes, I’ll just focus on eating and drinking.”
Hearing this, Rosalie smiled unconsciously. “Alright, when the time comes, I’ll support you and make sure you’re well-fed.”
Lillian held her cheek and looked at the smile on her friend’s face. She couldn’t help but say, “Rosie, your smile is so beautiful. Your smile seems to have a calming effect on people. You should smile more.”
“Smile more?” Rosalie couldn’t help but sigh internally. “Since when smiling has become a luxury for me?”
They had some more food and chatted for a while. Lillian’s phone rang again. After the call, she looked at her friend helplessly. “My mother is calling again. I have to go and fulfill my dating duties. Let’s meet up again when we have the chance.”
“Okay,” Rosalie replied. She watched her friend’s retreating figure and couldn’t help but feel a twinge of envy. Lillian had her own troubles, but at least she had a mother to push her to go on blind dates. Unlike her, who didn’t even have a mother.
Lillian rushed over to the location sent by his mother on WhatsApp. When she arrived at the entrance of the supermarket, she saw a man who looked somewhat similar to the photos her mother showed her. He seemed to be waiting for someone.
After some thought, she dialed his phone number and soon heard his phone ringing.
