Chapter 98 Making a choice

Sofie

“Thanks.” I uttered to the driver, as he helped me take out my luggages from the trunk of his taxi.

“No problem, ma’am.” He nodded, handing me my change.

I shook my head, as I waved. “No, no. Please take it.”

He looked shocked, before swiftly pocketing the cash. “Thanks a lot, ma’am. I really appreciate it. I hope you have a safe and hitch free flight.”

“I hope so too.” I muttered, more to myself than to him.

I was finally leaving America but I still didn’t feel eager to leave.

Amy and I had gotten into an argument earlier that morning, she had vowed to cut me off for good if I continued with my ‘stupid display of foolishness,” and in my anger, I had asked her to do so.

She had stormed out of our apartment before I left to heaven knows where.

I heaved a deep sigh of despondence, as I trekked into the airport while dragging my luggage along.

My eyes roamed around the waiting area as I walked in further.

The airport was strangely scanty.

Most of the seats in the waiting area were unoccupied, and there was no staff standing at the checkpoint.

The whole thing seemed strange.

Regardless, I sat down on an empty seat and nervously fiddled with my fingers as I looked around.

Now that I thought of it, it didn’t seem as if any flight had taken off that day, because I didn’t see neither air hostesses nor air hosts parading the vicinity.

Maybe there was an internal problem. I thought to myself.

“Do you ask have a flight scheduled for this morning?” An elderly man sitting beside me asked.

I tilted my head sideways and nodded. “Yes. In an hour.”

“Great. My flight was scheduled for an hour ago but it suddenly got postponed. It was after I got to the airport that an apology email was sent to me by the airport management. Apparently, there’s an internal issue.” He explained.

I fished out my phone, and scrolled through my emails but surprisingly, I hadn’t received anything like that.

“I didn’t get one though.” I muttered.

“Have you checked your spam messages?”

I nodded. “I have. There’s nothing related to that here.”

The man frowned before shrugging. “The issue has probably been resolved. I guess it won’t affect your flight then. Since they didn’t send anything to you.”

“I guess so.” I said, in agreement.

“You came with a lot of baggage.” He laughed, gesturing to my suitcases.

I nodded. “Yes. I did.”

“I guess you are permanently leaving the country then. Or are you going on a very long visit?”

“I’m leaving the country for good.” I replied.

“I see.” He nodded. “I’m going back to Italy. I came here for my late wife’s funeral.”

“Oh.” I muttered. “My sincere condolences.”

“Thanks.” He smiled. “Are you married?”

My heart lurched with inexplicable guilt, as I shook my head in negation. “I’m not.”

“Oh. So why are you leaving? Are you leaving to advance your studies?”

“Yes that too. But not solely because of that. It’s very complicated.” I divulged, to which he nodded.

“Your loved ones didn’t come to see you off.”

Bile clogged my throat like a heavy pill as I nodded. “Yes. They didn’t. I don’t have anybody like that.”

I didn’t know whether I still had parents.

My best friend had sworn to never speak to me again.

My ex boyfriend cum ex fiancé also didn’t give a damn about me anymore.

“I need to visit the restroom. I’ll be right back in a few.” He said, as he stood up.

I wiped away the tears clinging to my lashes, as I smiled and nodded. “Alright.”

As soon as the man left, there was sudden commotion in the airport.

Just as I was about to ask a girl, who was sitting in front of me, what the commotion was all about, she screeched. “He is here! Roman Giovanni is here!”

A mixture of both anger and elation coursed through me, as I whispered. “What?”

He had come for us,

“Excuse me. I need to take a picture of him. This is his first public appearance since his accident happened.” The girl said, pushing past me.

I was about to grab my baggage, and dip out of the airport when I saw him coming from afar, with his gaze fixated on me.

I sighed in resignation, as I got up and crossed my arms over my chest.

“No matter what you say or do, my decision is final, Roman.” I began, as he stopped a few steps away from me.

Murmurings began around me but I couldn’t find it in myself to care.

He sighed, before responding. “Please come back to me, Sofie. I will do anything you want. My life without you in it is useless. Utterly useless. The moment you walked into my life, you gave my worthless existence a purpose. Being with you makes me forget the brutal reality of my life. You-

I cut him short. “I don’t want to hear it, Roman. I know you’re behind this sudden airport shut down. Only you can do something as selfish as this.”

“Cara mia, please let me explain.” He started to say but I scoffed.

“Lana was right. I’m nothing but a golddigger, and I’m not ashamed to say it aloud. I was in love with your wealth and not you. I never loved you!” I spat, mustering the most sinister smile I could.

To my utter surprise, Roman just chuckled. “Okay then, but you know what? I don’t care. I have enough money that can last us forever even if you spend a million dollar per week. So please just come back to me, Sofie. You can take all my wealth as long as you become mine again.”

The mumblings got louder as camera flashes started going crazy.

“Don’t you get it? Have you become deaf and dumb? I said I never loved you and only dated you for your wealth.” I retorted.

He nodded. “I heard you very clearly, and we both know that every word you just uttered is nothing but a lie.”

“Fuck you.” I spat in frustration.

“I want that too.” He laughed.

“Do you think this is a joke?” I hollered. “I wish I never met you, Roman. Meeting you was the worst thing that ever happened to me.”

The smile instantly evaporated from his face, as he stared at me. “I don’t believe you. I won’t believe you.”

“I don’t care whether you believe me or not. That is your fucking problem. I hate you, and I just want you out of my life, yet you keep bothering me. Is that too much to ask for?” I hurled.

“You want me out of your life.” He muttered.

“Yes.” I fibbed, clenching my hands into fists.

“Then say it to my face. Look me in the eye, and tell me how much you hate me. Tell me you want me out of your life and I promise to disappear from your life forever.” He calmly replied.Content rights belong to NôvelDrama.Org.

I could do this. I thought, as I inhaled deeply.

I just had to put my natural acting skills into use, and he’d be out of my life forever.

Yes, I could do it.

I closed the distance between us, and looked him straight in the eye.

“I love you so much, Roman Giovanni. And you are right, every word that just came out of my mouth is nothing but a lie ” I rambled out in one breath.

I watched his face morph into a shocked expression, with my heart violently slamming against my chest.

“So-” I made him swallow the rest of his words, by tiptoeing, and pressing a kiss to his lips.
