Chapter 68
The Billionaire’s Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband’s Regret) Chapter 68
Chapter 68
Cassie.
As soon as I hang up the phone, I see Kayden staring back at me with wide eyes.
“What?”
“Sullivan is really getting on my nerves.”
I raise a brow at him. “What did he ever do to you?”
“Why does he have to be the one to pick you up? Is he your designated driver or something? He follows you around too much.”
I frown at him. “Kayden… just now you’re acting like a jealous boyfriend.”
He sighs, taking a step closer to me to gather me in his arms. “Well, actually, I am a jealous husband! I am not particularly happy that my wife is being picked up by some other guy. And this guy is always squeezing himself into the picture. It’s really annoying.”
I cannot believe I’m here this from the great Kayden Steele. Seven years ago, I would have killed to hear him say those words. When we were married, I had no idea he could be possessive. He could not care less which friends I go out with.
“Kayden, You’re no longer my husband now,” I remind him. “Ethan is one of my dearest friends.”
“Friend? Well, I don’t think he got the memo. Because he doesn’t see you as just his friend.”
“Well, same goes for you.” I narrow my eyes at him, and give him a teasing smile. “I’m not your wife anymore either.”
He tightens his arms around me. “The past two days, you were my wife. I was your husband. We took a step back in time when we were married. But this time, I tried to do a better job at being your husband.”
I sigh. The past two days have been… bliss. When I said yes to his proposal to leave everything behind and give him a chance to do the husband thing right, I didn’t know what to expect. I had no idea what he would be like.
Kayden showed me a side of him I had never seen before.
His touch is tender, his gaze warm as he looks at me.
It was as if the walls he had built around himself were crumbling, revealing a man I didn’t know existed. A man who was not afraid to show vulnerability, a man who was capable of deep love and affection.
He made me feel like I was right about falling in love with him after all.
And right now, even though I do not want to admit it, I am heartbroken that it had to end.
I gently pull away from him.
“I better pack.” I shake my head. “I can’t let Ethan know that we stayed in the same room.”
“I don’t care what he thinks. It’s not like you’re cheating on him. You’re not together. In fact, I’d like him to know, so he can stop his delusions about you.”
“Kayden, I agreed to this but it stays between us. It’s not because I didn’t want Ethan to find out. It’s because of me and my reputation. It’s about Kai, and his safety. Do you understand?”
“Now, it seems like I got a dose of my own medicine,” he says. “I now know what it feels like to be kept a secret.”
“But I’m not asking you to keep this a secret because I was trying to get back at you. I’m not doing it for revenge.”
He nods. “I know. I was just reminding myself what a big a*s I had been to you.” He reaches forward to tuck my hair behind my ear. “While you have been nothing but a perfect wife to me.”
“Let’s just bury the past, Kayden. Put it behind us. I’m proposing a truce. Cease fire?” I extend my hand to his. He stares at it for a long moment, then he takes it. But instead of shaking my hand, he brings it to his l*ps and gives it a ki*s.
He shakes his head. “No more fights from now on, Cassie. I won’t cause you any more trouble or pain. But this is not the end for us.”
“What do you mean?”

The look on his face is unfathomable.
He takes a step back, his eyes searching mine with a depth that sends shivers down my spine.
“Cassie,” he begins, his voice low and intense, “I will do everything in my power to win you back. Not because I was guilty of what I did to you when we were married, but because I can’t bear the thought of living another day without you by my side.”
“Kayden, we agreed that this will be a one–time thing.”
“YOU want this to be a one–time thing. But after everything that happened between us the past two days, do you really think I will let you go just like that?” he asks. He reaches out for my hand. “I’m in love with you, Cassie. And I know you feel the same way about me, too. And even if you don’t, I will do everything in my power to win you heart. I know that I have made mistakes. I pushed you away, when what I really wanted to do was pull you close. But I’m going to make that same mistake again.”
He brings my hands to his l*ps and ki*ses my fingers agai

He silences me with a chaste ki*s on the l*ps. “I don’t deserve you yet. But someday, I will. So, just give me a little okay? Have a little faith in me.”
A tear rolls down my ch*eks. I don’t know what else to tell him. I want to hope for a future for us. But at the same time, I don’t want to get my heart broken again by this very same man.
My phone rings again. I see Ethan’s name on the screen. I stare back at Kayden and gives me

standing behind him.
I am confronted with a mix of emotions. I feel guilty because I know I am hurting Ethan, and he doesn’t deserve this pain. As he locks me in his embrace, I also feel guilty like I was cheating on Kayden.
Damn it! I just don’t know what to do. I feel torn between my tumultuous past with Kayden and a stable future that Ethan has always been promising to me.
I pull away from him.
“You didn’t have to go all the way out here,” I say to Ethan.
“That’s what I’ve been telling him!” Amber snorts. “But he just won’t listen.”
“I had to see that you were okay. Lyn told me that you were here with Steele.”
Shit!
“Where is he?” Amber asks.
I try to keep my face steady, “What?”
“Steele,” Amber replies. “Your ex–husband, is it?”
Amber is really trying to get on my nerves.
“What about him?”
“Have you seen him?” Ethan asks.

11:17 AM
I shrug. “I saw him during the site inspection, before the storm hit. Can we go now?”
I try to sound unaffected as I change the subject.
“Oh, I think there he is!” Amber announces, pointing at something in the reception. Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.
I turn around and see Kayden standing at the front desk, probably checking out our room.
“Shall we go?” I ask Ethan. “I can’t wait to see Kai, and I have many designs to look at.”
I walk towards Ethan’s car, my heart pounding inside my chest. I can only pray that it’s not to obvious that I am hiding something.
An hour later, we are onboard Ethan’s private jet. I sit beside Ethan and Amber sits opposite us.
“Are you okay?” Ethan asks.
“Yes, why wouldn’t I be?”
He shrugs. “You’re awfully quiet.”
“I’m just tired,” I lie. “I have a lot of things on my mind.”
“How did inspection go?”
“It’s really positive. The residents seem overly excited to have a seven–star hotel built in their area.”
“Did Steele give you a hard time?” Ethan asks. I can see genuine concern on his face.
I shake my head. “No. Contrary to what Iwasm expecting, he is quite… friendly and helpful.”
I hear a snort in front of us. I look up and see Amber reading a magazine, trying to look as if it isn’t her.
Ethan stands up from his seat. “Let me have a word with the captain.”
Ethan goes to the cockpit, leaving me alone with Amber.
What is this girl doing with us anyway?
Amber turns her piercing gaze on me. Her eyes seem to see right through me, and I suddenly feel exposed under her scrutiny.
“You bitch!” she begins. Her tone laced with venom. “When will you stop hurting Ethan?”
I stare back at her in surprise. “I’m afraid I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Come on! Don’t act innocent. I can tell. And I bet, Ethan can, too.”
I draw my brows together, not quite sure I’m following what she is saying.
“What the hell are you talking about?” I ask, still maintaining my innocence.
Amber points an accusing finger at me. “You slept with your ex–husband, didn’t you?”
