The Alpha’s Dynasty

Nervous wreck

Maya

“Kim!” I called out from my office. Within seconds, she opened the door and peered into my office. Her workstation was just outside my office. “Could you please give me today’s schedule?”

She smiled. It was a fake smile that didn’t reach her eyes but I was now used to that. “Of course.” Closing the door, she disappeared and came back two minutes later with a printed A4 paper which she placed on my table. “Here’s your schedule, Maya.”

She had returned to work for me at the beginning of that week and I was almost glad she was back when I saw her. I had accumulated a tonne of unfinished work and had no choice but to start giving her tasks. She is usually very efficient and that worked in my favor.

“Thank you,” I lifted the paper and looked through it. Everything was as should be. Eleven to twelve o’clock was not included as I instructed because I had some personal business to take care of. Instead of leaving immediately, she studied me.

“You can go now.” I told her, wondering what she could be up to. I didn’t trust her yet so I knew I’d have to check with Harry to find out the correct time of the board meeting. Kim was someone who capable of giving you a wrong schedule just to get you fired. I was not planning on taking any risks.

“Last week, I noticed that you left at the same time on the same day,” she began. “Would it be too much to ask if I requested to know where you’re going? I’m your assistant, after all. I believe I have a right to know what my boss is up to.”

Since she returned from working for Carrington, her attitude was different. She no longer pretended to like me as she used to. Now, she just seemed to talk to me however way she wants. She didn’t care whether I liked it or not. Something had changed and I knew that that calculating girl was up to something.

“No,” I shook my head. “You do not have that right, Kim. On the other hand, I have a right to my privacy. Would it be too much to ask if I told you to stop asking questions about things that don’t concern you?”

I hated to be rude to anyone but she made it so hard for me to be polite. Sometimes, I thought she was trying to rile me up. If I was a bad person, I’d have fired her by now. But she I knew she was a recent graduate and I wanted to give her a chance to start a life for herself and build a career. It was very important to empower young girls so they could have more choices in life.

With the high unemployment rates in the country, a lot of girls get married early just because they couldn’t support themselves after school. Some started selling themselves or went abroad looking for jobs and end up being trafficked, then forced to work under terrible conditions or became influencers that could barely make enough to sustain themselves. I didn’t wish that even for my worst enemy. I hoped Kim’s attitude was going to change soon because she would end up in a terrible situation because of it.

“Last Wednesday,” she continued. “Harry went out a few minutes after you left. Are you in a secret relationship with him?”

I chuckled, shaking my head. “That’s none of your business, my dear assistant. Could you please leave because we both have a lot of work to do? You could be of more use helping me finish the presentation I’ve mailed to you.”

“I want him,” she said.

“Who?” I asked, raising a brow.

“Harry,” she said.Property © NôvelDrama.Org.

“Oh, you mean things are already over with Mr. Carrington? What happened?”

“Oh, are we getting involved in each other’s private business now?”

“Okay, now go work so you can have a chance to win this month’s Employee of the Month Award.”

She smirked and walked out, thinking I still cared about the award. Honestly, I used to want that award just for prestige. But, I knew there are people in the company that needed that extra money more than I did. All I needed was to do my work properly and become a senior executive someday. I had always wanted to be a CEO and I hoped that the dream would come true. My ultimate goal was to manage a big company with a person like Harry by my side.

At 10:30, I left the building and drove to my apartment. I had nothing to do there but I had to make sure no one followed me to my final destination. I was quite sure no one at the office had any interest in following me but I had always been a tad bit paranoid, a trait I got from my mother. I was even more anxious that day because I actually had a feeling that someone was following me. After walking back and forth in my living room, I opened the door and took a look around before closing it. As I descended the stairs, I felt more alert than ever. When I made it to my car without seeing any suspicious person in the vicinity, I took a deep breath and started the car.

Having another job of any kind, especially when you’re an executive was not allowed at the Insurance Company but this other job was extremely important to me. I had to do it or I wouldn’t be happy. My job at Milner Insurance was what I did for a living but I volunteered as a teacher at this center for humanitarian reasons.

The gate to St. Felicity’s Center for Visually Impaired Children came into view. As I waited for the gate to open, I looked through the side mirror and saw a black saloon car a few meters behind me. I ignored it and drove through. If only I could stop being such a nervous wreck.
