Millie sighed Inwardly. Vanessa was willing to spend so much money on a meal just for a position. “What a world we live in,” Millie mused. She suddenly realized how difficult life was for those at the bottom.

“I don’t want to compete for the deputy chief spot. Besides, I’m not qualified for it.”

Her words were a comforting reassurance for Vanessa “You really don’t want to compete for it?” she asked anxiously.

Millie answered, “I really don’t.”

Right away, a smile spread across Vanessa’s face. “But Dr. Caldwell, isn’t advancing in the hospital what it’s all about?”

“My future holds many possibilities, but this is your only path,” Millie replied lightly.

Vanessa fell silent for a moment, then hummed in agreement. It was exactly as Millie had said.

“Dr. Xander, you need to give it your all. All the best!” Millie encouraged her with a smile.

At that point, Vanessa was overjoyed. She quickly nudged Jasper and said, “Jasper, our future is secure now. Quick, thank Ms. Millie!”

Millie hadn’t expected her decision not to compete would make Vanessa so happy.

“But Dr. Xander, what about the others?” Millie asked cautiously.

Vanessa responded confidently, “Well, they don’t measure up to me.

Millie remained silent. She simply nodded and glanced at Jasper. He was truly handsome and adorable.

When she first married Winston, she had dreamed of having a child with him. Millie often imagined how gorgeous and brilliant their child would be.

Unfortunately, Winston had never been intimate with her. But now, Millie felt grateful for his avoidance.

Then, Millie used the excuse of going to the restroom to pay the bill. The total came to over 200 dollars.

Vanessa had ordered steak for Millie and Jasper, yet she couldn’t bear to order one for herself. Millie sighed internally at that thought.

After exchanging a few more words with Vanessa, Millle drove her and Jasper back to their home.

In the car, the previously silent Jasper finally spoke up.

“Wow! What a cool car!” he exclaimed.

“Wow! It’s purple.”

“Ms. Millie, does this car have a convertible option?” Material © of NôvelDrama.Org.

“Wow, Ms. Millie, you’re so cool!”

Millie noticed the admiration in Jasper’s eyes and told him, “One day, you’ll have all of these too.”

Vanessa and Jasper lived in a rented apartment near the hospital, but the environment wasn’t ideal. Still, seeing Vanessa happily holding her son’s hand as they walked away filled Millie with a sense of relief.

Everyone had their own life, after all, and Vanessa seemed genuinely satisfied with hers.

As Millie pulled out of the run–down residential area, a black car suddenly crashed into hers. She slammed the brakes, but the impact pushed her vehicle backward.

The airbags deployed, and she jolted back into her seat. Millie gripped the steering wheel tightly and winced as a sharp pain shot through her neck.

With her head lowered, she frowned tightly. Suddenly, the car door was yanked open.

She glanced out, only to see a burly man staring at her. Before she could react, he struck her, knocking her unconscious.

Vanessa looked back just as she was about to enter her building. Why had Millie’s car stopped and remained stationary?

Soon, a crowd gathered around the scene.

“It looks like the owner’s been abducted!” someone yelled.

“Oh my goodness! They kidnapped her in public! How brazen!”

Vanessa’s gut twisted with a bad feeling. She told Jasper to head home and rushed over.

Sure enough, Millie was missing, but her phone was on the ground. Vanessa quickly picked it up and asked the onlookers, “Has anyone called the police?”

Everyone nodded in response.

After that, Vanessa scrolled through Millie’s contacts and found Winston’s number in the call log. She tried to reach him, but alas, his number was blocked.

With no other option, Vanessa retrieved her own phone and immediately called Winston
