Chapter 177

After lunch, Millie was familiarizing herself with the outpatient clinic environment when she received a message from Thomas.

Thomas: “Millie, let’s go out to have fun!”

Millie: “My dear uncle, I’m employed. I need to work.”

Thomas: “Why do you need to work? Can’t our family support you?”

Millie felt resigned. The Caldwells could indeed support her financially, but she couldn’t depend on them forever.

Thomas: “Well, let me take you out for a nice meal tonight. Consider it a treat.”

Millie smiled and replied, “Okay.”

Perhaps Thomas felt that she had been treated unfairly at the dinner with Gideon the previous night, so he wanted to treat her to a nice meal.

As Millie walked toward the elevator, she suddenly spotted a familiar and somewhat timid. figure at the front desk.

Frowning, she recognized Cara, the woman from earlier. She was dressed simply–a clean, white blouse with floral canvas shoes. Her dark hair was neatly tied up, giving her a dignified demeanor.

Cara happened to look up and saw Millie. Her lips parted slightly while her eyes lit up a glint of recognition.

Millie glanced around but didn’t see the man who had been with Cara earlier. She couldn’t help but walk toward Cara.

Cara noticed Millie and smiled faintly.

Millie saw signs of aging in her eyes. “Hello, I’m Dr. Millie Caldwell. We met this morning,” she introduced herself.

Cara nodded. “Hello.”

“Didn’t you go back?”

Cara replied with a smile, “My husband went home, and I sneaked out to come back here. I want to ask about my condition. How long would the treatment take? Can it be cured? How much would it cost?”

Cara’s voice was soft, showing that she was meticulous and gentle. Yet, Millie felt a strong determination to survive emanating from her.

“Your condition isn’t critical yet, but it will require surgery,” Millie answered tactfully. Hospitalization, surgery, and medications afterward could total around 300 thousand dollars.

“Do you have any health insurance? We’ll try our best to help with reimbursement. All in all, it

shouldn’t be too expensive.”

Since Cara was gentle. Millie subconsciously softened her tone a

However, Cara’s eyes widened with horror upon hearing the amount. It was astronomical to her! She gripped the comer of her shirt tightly, nodded, and whispered, “I don’t have health

300 thousand dollars. There was no way Kane would give her that much money for treatment. With no options left, she could only wait for death.

Millie frowned as she noticed a tear trickle down Cara’s cheek.

“Dr. Caldwell

Suddenly, Lainey’s voice came from behind. Millie turned and saw her mentor, her mouth agape. When she glanced back, all Millie saw was Cara hurrying away.

“Do not engage with patients privately!” Lainey chided. Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.

“Okay.” Millie nodded, yet the image of Cara’s quiet determination to survive lingered in her

mind.

Lainey then instructed, “Head down to the first floor and grab something for me. Don’t take

too long.”

Millie hummed in acknowledgment and hurried off to attend to her task

As she descended the stairs, she caught sight of patients with varied expressions. Some appeared somber, while some were delighted.

Millie sighed. She couldn’t help but think of Cara again. If doctors couldn’t save lives, how were they deserving of white coats?

“Hey, sir! This is a hospital!”

“You should talk it out instead of resorting to violence!*

Suddenly, the first–floor lobby erupted with shouts. In a flash, the front desk was overwhelmed with people
