Isabel shook her head. “It’s nothing. Maybe I was mistaken.”
Mayra kept walking and pretended not to hear something calling her name. Then, she directly got into a cab. The driver asked, “Miss, where to?”
Mayra said, “To the Barlow–I mean the Paramount Hall.”
The driver replied, “Got it.”
It was a short drive to the Paramount Hall. When they arrived at the entrance, Mayra paid the fare and got out. Just as she took out the spare keys, someone opened the door from the inside.
Mayra was stunned for a moment. A middle–aged man with a solemn
expression stepped over the threshold while holding a tobacco pipe. Mayra stammered, “H–Hi, sir… I’m here for Gordon.”
Without saying a word, the serious–looking man walked past her. He tapped the doorframe with his tobacco pipe.
Mayra watched the man head toward an unknown direction with his hands clasped behind. Since he ignored her, she stepped inside and headed straight to the inner courtyard of Paramount Hall.
She opened the door to Gordon’s room, which was very tidy. She put down her things. Then, she sat at Gordon’s work desk and messaged him, “I’m at your house. I think I saw your dad, but he ignored me and left. You both look equally stern.”
Gordon quickly replied, “My dad… doesn’t speak. If you need anything, write it down instead. He can understand.”
Mayra texted, “When I got to your house, your dad looked at me once and left.”
Gordon typed, “It’s okay, he knows you. Now that you’re back, you can rest in my room.”
Mayra replied, “Does that mean I can come and go freely at your house from now on? Am I considered family?”
The word “family” was special and sensitive to Mayra. She felt her heart

pounding at the moment.
After half a minute, Gordon wrote back, “Yes.” ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
Mayra felt overjoyed. She stood up on the chair and threw herself onto Gordon’s bed. The bed had Gordon’s scent, which was the lingering fragrance of the soap he used.
Mayra replied, “Well, can I wear your slippers?”
Gordon texted, “There’s a new pair at the bottom of the closet drawer.”
Mayra messaged, “I want to wear your clothes.”
Gordon typed, “Sure, go ahead. They’re all washed and cleaned.”
Mayra finally understood what it was like to date Gordon. He gave her a sense of reassuring belonging as if she could possess all of his things and be unconditionally accepted by him.
Despite having lived two lifetimes, this was her first time feeling this happy, That fluttering feeling in her heart was unprecedented. She wished she
could’ve met Gordon sooner.
