Jessie clenched his clothes tightly, her tears soaking his shirt.

He swore he’d never make her cry, but now every tear she shed was because of him.

The silence in the air was suffocating. She calmed herself and pushed him away gently.

Sniffling, she said, “You are free to visit your sons but don’t mess up our plans. because of your issues. No need to worry, I won’t cling to you anymore. This marriage, even if you don’t want to leave, it’s over. I don’t have a habit of picking up trash.”

Chase frowned at the mention of the word “trash, but Jessie pressed on. “I admit I was too naive in the past, holding onto unrealistic hopes about you. But now I already got it. It’s better to let go of something that can’t be held! Give me money, and sort out the paperwork whenever you can, I promise to be there whenever you need me. I will keep my word.”

“What if I refuse?”

Jessie locked eyes with his dark gaze. Her eyes, still glossy from tears, gleamed. unusually bright and clear. “Then I’ll ruin you and your entire family’s reputation. You know I’m capable of doing it!”

Chase pulled out a check and scribbled a number on it, passing it to her. “The remaining 750 thousand dollars will be paid after the divorce.”

Jessie smirked, a cold chuckle escaping her lips. Just how afraid are you that I won’t divorce you? Relax, being with a man like you makes me sick. Get lost.” All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.

She snatched the check without a second thought and left without looking back.

Finally, there was hope for Dad!

Jessie cashed the check and immediately settled the medical bills. After that, she hailed a cab to get to the Thompson family cemetery.

It was a private, upscale cemetery where only the wealthy and prestigious were buried. Old Madam Thompson was also laid to rest here. Jessie bought her

It didn’t take long for Jessie to find a new grave, surrounded by a circle of plum

trees

The plum trees had already begun to bud, and it wouldn’t be long before they blossomed.

On the cold tombstone was engraved an unfamiliar name “Rachel Thompson’s

Grave.”

She knew Chase cherished his sister dearly. After her sister went missing, she became a taboo topic for him, something he didn’t want anyone else to mention. Thus, Jessie knew nothing about his sister.

Rachel. Is that her name? Jessie had never heard of it before.

She squatted down, examining the photo on the tombstone. It must have been taken when Rachel was five or six years old, with her chubby cheeks and a hint of Chase’s features in her eyes and brows.

Jessie was still clueless. She snapped a photo with her phone, intending to use it as her only clue.

Setting down the wind chime flowers she bought for Old Madam Thompson, she knelt in front of Rachel’s grave, speaking softly, “Rachel, I’m Jessie Summers. If you were alive, you would regard me as sister–in–law, or rather, ex–sister–in–law. I’m sorry to meet you like this. I’ll definitely find out the truth about your death.”

Old Madam Thompson’s tomb was just nearby. Her gentle smile is captured in the photo as if frozen in time.

Feeling a bit tired, Jessie sat down beside the tombstone, almost as if she were having a chat with Old Madam Thompson herself.

“Grandma, I’m sorry. I couldn’t protect that child. But Chase, that good–for- nothing, has already carried on the family line for the Thompson family. You don’t have to worry about the family’s having no successor anymore.

“Grandma, he’s changed. He’s not the person I used to know. He used to say he’d shield me from the storms, but now all my storms are caused by him. If you were still alive, you wouldn’t let him treat me like this, would you?”

Jessie forced a smile. “Grandma, Chase and I are about to divorce. You used to say if he dared to bully me, even if you were dead, you’d climb out of your coffin to

“Grandma, what does it feel like to die? Is it dark? I’m scared of little bugs biting me. What should I do?

“Grandma, I miss you…”
