Chapter 22 Your So–called Honorable Father

Peyton was focusing on the documents. Nolan’s sudden question scared her so much that she fell to the ground, the documents in her hands scattering everywhere.

She wondered, “Nolan usually came back late at night. Why did he return so early today?”

Although Peyton was still Nolan’s nominal wife, her sneaking into his study was disgraceful. Moreover, she knew that he hated others playing tricks behind his back the most.

She swallowed subconsciously, and the expression on her face was unnatural. “You… you are back.”

Perhaps because Nolan had just attended a banquet, he was wearing a black–and–white suit, which set off his tall and straight figure. His cold eyes were fixed on Peyton, and Peyton couldn’t help but feel chill.

Nolan walked toward Peyton while taking off his suit jacket unhurriedly. He was born into a wealthy family, and his every move captured elegance and dignity.

Peyton couldn’t think straight when she saw Nolan take off his clothes. She wanted to escape, yet something seemed to root her on the spot.

Before she was in a relationship with Nolan, he was known as a ruthless devil who would achieve his goals by every means.

Now, Peyton finally felt the fear of ordinary people. For a while, she lost the use of her limbs. Nolan’s terrifying and domineering aura forced her to retreat.

She stopped when her back hit the safe and she had no way out. Nolan approached her step by step and crouched in front of her in the end.

“Did you see it?” His tone was calm, and so were his eyes.

Peyton knew that the more composed he looked, the more furious he

was.

Nolan’s eyes were as unfathomable as the night sky. No one could tell what he was thinking.

Peyton nodded carefully but shook her head the next second.

She had just read part of the verification of death and didn’t have time to finish her reading.

Nolan raised his well–defined hand and pinched Peyton’s chin, forcing her to look straight into his eyes.

“Did you figure out why I didn’t leave that child alive?”

Peyton bit her lips in fright and then answered in a low voice, “Because of Leilani.”

According to the autopsy report, Leilani was not drowned in the sea. Instead, she was strangled to death and then thrown into the sea by

someone.

More importantly, when she died, she was pregnant for three months.

If Leilani had been in love with Kason, the child in her belly was likely to be Kason’s.

Nolan rubbed Peyton’s pursed lips and whispered coldly into her ear, “I’ve checked the surveillance footage of the day when Paula went to the gynecology and obstetrics department in the hospital. That day, Kason was also there.”

Peyton explained hurriedly, “My father has divorced my mother for many years, and it is normal for him to want a lover. I have looked into his relationship with Leilani before. He was quite generous to her and didn’t treat her badly. He wouldn’t be so heartless and kill her.”

Nolan put on a cold smile. This was the first time he had talked about Paula’s death with Peyton.

“In your eyes, Kason is an upright person only because he is father and brings you up. However, where there is light, there is a shadow. No one in the world is perfect. You just lived in a fake fairytale world built by him.”

Peyton was dumbfounded. Nolan was right. Kason doted on her in the past, but he was heartless to her now. Perhaps he had never changed, and it was just that he had forcefully separated her from reality.

Kason might have done the same thing as Nolan.

Peyton defended Kason weakly, “No matter what happened, my father… would never have killed Leilani.”

Nolan touched Peyton’s cheek. “Peytie, how naïve you are. You have thought that I will never leave you, right?”

Peyton hadn’t heard him talk to her with such an intimate and affectionate tone for long. She felt as if he was still her gentle beloved, although his eyes were cold and emotionless.

Peyton couldn’t deny it. She had indeed thought that Peyton would be with her for a lifetime until she read the news of him helping Helena in the airport. At that moment, she was finally struck by reality.

Nolan continued, “You are always eager to figure out the truth. I’ll tell you about it. Kason didn’t want Paula to give birth to the child, nor did he plan to form a family with her. During early pregnancy, it is relatively safe to have an abortion. That day, Kason had an argument

with Paula. He killed her accidentally and threw her into the sea to protect himself.”

Peyton’s chin was in pain as it was pinched by him. Nolan said

blankly, “Paula was my only younger sister, and she had been an apple of my parents‘ eyes since young. If she wasn’t kidnapped and went missing, she would never have died so miserably.

“If not for that my parents had left Paula’s DNA sample in the police station, I would have had no chance of finding her body, as well as the unborn child in her belly. She was still so young, but she had suffered so much.”

Peyton broke free from Nolan. She was afraid that he would lose control and kill her to avenge his sister.

Nolan was lost in his thought and continued, “Over the years, I have imagined countless times the scene of I reuniting with Paula. I have never thought that I would meet her again in the cold mortuary. Peytie, have you ever seen a corpse that was being soaked in the sea for half a month?”

Nolan’s blank eyes were filled with sadness. Shelia had told Peyton how Nolan doted on Paula in the past. And he never gave up looking for Paula in the past decade.

Peyton could understand Nolan’s despair when he saw Paula in the mortuary.

Even so, she still defended her father instinctively.

“Since you only saw her body, how could you confirm that she was killed by my father?”

Nolan’s face suddenly changed. The previous sadness in his eyes instantly gave way to ruthlessness, which made him look like a wolf.

‘II I don’t have irrefutable evidence, do you think I will act rashly regardless of the law? After Paula’s funeral, I got someone to

investigate the cause of her death secretly. I didn’t expect to discover so many secrets about your father.”

Peyton muttered, “What secrets?”

“Do you know how many women your seemingly upright father had an affair with? Oh, you certainly don’t know. After all, you said that he is single, and it is normal for him to have a lover.”

Peyton did think so. However, what Nolan said next shocked her.

“Ilis lovers were all girls who were the same age as you and even younger than you. Most men prefer young girls, but no one is as heartless as he is. Among his lovers, many of them were forced to abort their children, and several of them did it more than once. A few girls suffered from severe gynecologic diseases because they were young and ignorant. A woman lost her right to be a mother because she got pregnant but had an abortion many times. The most unlucky one went insane and killed herself by jumping from a building.”

Peyton didn’t believe Nolan’s words and shook her head all the time. “No… My father…”

Before she could finish her words, Nolan reached out to take a pile of documents from the safe and throw them in front of her.

“Read them and see what kind of person your so–call honorable father is.”
