Chapter 6
As they walked through the front entrance of the hotel, Jolene steadily held onto the smile on her face. She escorted Mrs. Evert to her car. Right before she could shut the door, the woman reached for her hand once more.
“Tomorrow night at seven o’clock. Go to the cafe on the first floor of Lofan Company. Don’t forget, Miss Marsh”
“Thank you, Mrs. Evert, I’ll definitely be there,” she answered obediently.
At last, the car drove off with Mrs. Evert. However, Jolene’s smile still stayed put. Bowen and Viona were still getting ready to leave.
It wasn’t until Bowen’s car left did she finally allow herself to relax. She felt her entire body slump forward.
Mrs. Evert’s message couldn’t have been clearer.
As she was worried that she’d be an obstacle to Bowen and Viona’s marriage, the woman was more than eager to get rid of her.

The son of the Evert family’s gardener.
She was always going to be one place below them. It was her destiny.
She wasn’t angry, though. After all, it was normal to have different classes. It was simply a fact of history.
Knowing one’s place was for the best.
Don’t overstep your boundaries.
Releasing a long sigh that she’d been bottling up, Jolene trekked over to the parking lot to find her car.
Once she settled into her seat, she didn’t move for a long time.

She hadn’t eaten all night. As soon as she got home, prepared herself a bowl of noodles. She should’ve been starving but instead found herself struggling to finish even half of it.
Her eyes landed on a slim fountain pen atop the table. It was Bowen’s.

Maybe he took it out last night and forgot to retrieve it before heading out.
After a moment of thought, she carefully placed it inside her bag. She’ll return it tomorrow at work.
It’s not like he’ll be coming to visit.
Last night, he’d broken his own rules and stayed the night. Maybe it was his way of saying goodbye.
Before going to bed, Jolene decided to call her mother.
When she answered, her mother’s voice was low. “He’s still up. Are you doing okay? I’ll call you in the morning.”
The man she was referring to was Jolene’s stepfather.
In her eyes, she thought he was the incarnation of the devil.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t deny that he’d been the one to raise her and her brother. It was because of him that they’d been able to attend college.
Without another word, she hung up the phone.
It didn’t take long before she drifted off into a deep sleep.

A little after midnight, she awoke to her doorbell being rung.
As a light sleeper, she was up right away.
She peered out her window and spotted a tall figure standing outside her garden.
Was that… Bowen?
She glanced at the clock ticking away on her wall. 1:30 AM.
What is he doing here at this hour?
Throwing on a more presentable outfit, she hurried downstairs and yanked open the door.
It had been drizzling outside, and Bowen’s clothes were slightly damp.
Just as she was about to question his abrupt appearance at such a late hour, his arms came up to wrap her in an embrace.
His lips enveloped hers.
This kiss felt fiercer and more impatient than usual.

So he’d been drinking.

In his intoxicated madness, he continued to kiss her to the point of breathlessness.
She was sure that, if she hadn’t pushed him away after a while, he would’ve done her right then and there in the garden.
He scooped her up and strode through her door, not even bothering to remove his shoes. He made a beeline for her room and wasted no time in pinning her down on her bed. The soft blankets cushioned her impact.
Tonight, this version of Bowen was demanding for her attention.
He planted kiss after kiss, leaving behind a strawberry field of red marks.
Jolene quickly blocked the next one. “It’s too hot for me to cover up with a turtleneck or scarf tomorrow.”
He finally released her.
However, it wasn’t before he leaned forward and nibbled at a spot on her chest.
When he pulled away, he left behind a round bruise with slight teeth marks.
Afterward, as she lay across his chest, she couldn’t help but let out a laugh.
“Mr. Evert, you owe me a little more tonight. I’ve sacrificed too much of myself today
