Chapter 52: I Don’t Seem to Know You
Finally, it was the weekend. A few days ago, her cell phone broke, and after Rex found out, he said that he would take her to get a new one on the weekend.
She saw Rex holding the camera and walked up to him, “Did you say you would take me to buy a mobile phone?”
Rex put the camera into his bag, “Bring your sandwich. Let’s go.”
Wendy stuck out her tongue, took a sandwich from the dining table, and quickly caught up with Rex. Wendy followed behind Rex and enjoyed the delicious food.
Wendy quickly finished the sandwich. Just as she was about to use her hand to wipe away the residue on her face, she saw Rex handing her a tissue. Wendy took it, scrubbed her face with it, and threw it into the trash can by the roadside.
At this moment, Rex’s phone rang. It was an English song. He took his phone out of his pocket and looked down at it. Frowning, he didn’t pick it up and put it back in his pocket. However, the phone continued to ring, as if it wouldn’t stop.
Wendy glanced at Rex, “Why didn’t you answer it?”
“It’s not an important call,” Rex said with a straight face.
Wendy looked at his face and stopped asking. Rex’s phone stopped ringing after a while.
Not long after they had left, they arrived at a mobile phone store. The small episode had also been forgotten by Wendy.
Wendy was attracted by the variety of mobile phones in front of her and she didn’t know which one to pick. She turned to Rex behind her, “Which one do you think we should buy?”
Rex took a look at all the phones, then went to the clerk, “Is there a durable and easy-to-operate mobile phone here?”
The clerk cast a strange look at Rex, then looked at Wendy, who kept exclaiming. The clerk pointed at a dumbphone in the cabinet, “Are you referring to this one?”
Rex sniffed and replied politely, “Let me think about it. Thank you.”
In the end, Wendy ignored Rex’s advice and picked a newly released cell phone. All the features of it were novel to Wendy, but it was not easy for Wendy to learn how to use it and it looked fragile.
Wendy kept studying her phone, “Teach me when we get home. I can’t wait to use it.”
Rex coughed, “I can teach you. Come with me somewhere first.”
“Where are we going?”
“You’ll know when you get there.”
When Wendy arrived at the place that Rex had mentioned, she realized that she knew very little about him. In front of her was a studio, and all of Rex’s photographs were hanging in it. Wendy was so surprised that she couldn’t speak. She looked around and found that the walls along with the curtains were beige. The interiors of the studio were all warm colors. Could it be that all these were designed by Rex? Was he a warm person?
Wendy strolled around the room. In a corner, she saw the photo of herself that he had taken that day. The color of the photos seemed to have been adjusted, thus the whole picture seemed warm. Wendy reached out her hand and was about to touch those photos when Rex’s voice came from behind her, “You should find a place to sit for a while first. I still have some things to deal with.”
“Okay.” Wendy sat down on the sofa, but her eyes were still fixed on those photos. Wendy saw a photo from a distance. It was the back of a girl. Wendy felt a little familiar, but she couldn’t tell where she had seen it before. She looked at it carefully and found that the girl was holding a whiteboard with a line of small words on it. Wendy couldn’t see what it was because of the distance. She looked back at Rex, who was typing on the keyboard in front of his desk and didn’t want to disturb him. She got up gently, walked over, and saw the line of small words on the photo.
“Love may be a redemption or a disaster, but you are my disaster.”
“Wendy.” Wendy heard Rex and quickly turned around. Rex waved at her, signaling for her to come over.
Wendy walked over, “What’s wrong?”
“I remember you worked for your school newspaper? Write copies of these pictures for me.”
“These?” Wendy asked as she pointed at the computer.
“Yes, sit here and write. I need to go out for a while.”
“Okay.” Wendy sat in front of the computer. Looking at those pictures, she habitually bit the top of her pen.
There was a total of five pictures. The first was a sea, the second was a sea at sunrise, the third was a sea at high tide, the fourth was a sea during low tide, and the fifth was a sea at sunset.
“When did he take these photos? This cold fish is truly mysterious.”
Suddenly, Wendy’s attention was drawn to a figure. She saw herself in the bottom left of the last image. Wendy patted her forehead as she came to a sudden realization, “This…… this isn’t…… isn’t this……”
Rex’s voice suddenly came from above her head. He handed her a cup of coffee, “I’ve been out for so long and you haven’t written a single word?”
Wendy held the coffee with both hands and looked at Rex with a smile, “I…… was just thinking.”
Rex picked up the coffee on the table and took a sip, “Do your brain cells still have the function of thinking?”
Wendy glared at him. Looking at those photos, she suddenly remembered that she had met him when she was a child. At that time, he also liked to take photos.
“You’ve seen the photos anyway. Go back and write them tonight. Let’s go. I’ll teach you how to use your mobile phone when we get home.”
“Really?” Wendy’s eyes lit up when she heard that.Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
“Yeah.”
Wendy followed Rex out. Wendy turned around and glanced at Rex. She bit her lips and lowered her head at the end.
“If you have anything to ask, just say it. I might not say it after today.”
Wendy cleared her throat, “Are you the only one who works for this studio?”
“Five.”
“Oh, then…… do your parents know?” Wendy asked tentatively.
“Don’t you already know the answer? Didn’t they want me to inherit Glory Group since my childhood?” Wendy seemed to feel his unwillingness from his words and did not say anything else.
Rex looked down and saw Wendy’s head. He clenched his fist, “It’s what I like anyway.”
“I find that I don’t seem to know you anymore.”
“Then get to know me again.”
“Sure.” Wendy stood in front of Rex and stared into his eyes, “Today is the first day we met again. I am Wendy. Nice to meet you.” Wendy stretched out her hand and Rex lowered his head to look at Wendy’s outstretched hand. He clenched his hand and hesitated for a moment before reaching out his hand timidly. It was only when their hands were clasped that he realized that he wasn’t as strong as he thought.
Sometimes, in front of love, no matter how strong-willed a person was, he might not know how to grasp it. He would panic, and he would pace back and forth uneasily. That kind of mood was bitter, sweet, and sour, only he knows his feelings.
Of course, love was not a poem. It didn’t need to be gorgeous and complicated. When it first came, it was already stunning.
When you fell in love with someone, you must learn to bear the uneasiness brought by loneliness. Love was a person’s business. No law stated that if you loved him, he must love you back. Love had nothing to do with kindness, compassion, or charity. If you were in love, you could stay with him. If he didn’t love you, you could end this unrequited love. However, few people were that free and easy.
Because when you fell in love with someone, you would change yourself to make him happy. Because in love with someone, your world would have a new name and a new memory.
Rex, since when did you become so fragile and greedy? You yearned for every minute and second, year after year.
This kind of greed was like an addiction that couldn’t be quit or forgotten. He wanted to share his happiness with her as soon as possible; he needed her comfort most when he was upset.
However, when he wanted to say something, he gave up immediately. He would wonder if this would bother her, so he chose to be silent. He would remain silent until one day, his longing for her reached a climax, like fireworks, instantly lighting up the whole sky. The closer he was, the more he wanted to get. He always wanted to get something in return, but how could that be possible?
There was no equal love in this world. Just as the affection between parents and children was also unequal.
Wendy, how can I admit that I’ve fallen in love with you?
When we were young, we thought our promise could stand the test of time. Back then, how could our faces so easily turn red and our hearts race? Back then, the times were so cruel and cold. The youth was originally a chaotic separation, and time passed. In the end, you and I went our separate ways.
