CHAPTER EIGHTY-THREE:
A man with a silver eye
--
That day, Althea was busy watching out for Kai to be bothered by the continuous ringing and buzzing of her phone. There was nothing more important than her child’s safety. Althea watched from afar as her son rode a horse in the merry-go-round ride. Kai searched for her face and when their eyes met, the young boy beamed at her. His eyes were going into slits in happiness and with one hand, he waved at her.
Althea’s heart thump in nervousness, thinking that her son might fall from the horse, but seeing that his figure did not wobble at all, she sighed in relief and waved back at him. Then she mouthed at him, “Be careful!”
Her son obediently nodded his head and once again held the pole of the horse with two hands. Althea let out a small chuckle before letting her eyes stray at the place where they’re at.
The amusement that time was bustling with people. There are many families, boys and girls with their mother and father, walking around the place. She can also find students with their teachers guiding them in the tour. They were probably having a field trip.
Some came alone just to enjoy the foods in the stalls, some came with their lovers on their date.
There were different kinds of people and different kinds of emotions, but she can see happiness above all the other emotions on the people’s faces. As Althea was lost in thought, her eyes accidentally looked at someone from the crowd, meters away from her. He was also looking at him without emotion on his face.
Althea paused her train of thoughts and stared back, thinking that he will remove his gaze after being caught. But contrary to her expectation, the man did not even flinch, nor he looked away. Althea looked away, hoping that he will also look away. But a minute passed, Althea can still feel the gaze on her.
It was bone piercing; Althea felt the chill run on her spine. She decided to peek, and lo and behold, as she expected, he was still looking at her. Althea’s heart thumped widely when she noticed something. Their distance decreased.
Not only that, but Althea can also feel gazes from different directions aside from the man she initially saw. Althea’s throat tightens when she spotted the others also just meters away from her. Likewise, they were looking at her without emotions on their eyes.
Althea had a bad feeling. She immediately looked at the ride and saw that it was slowly stopping. Kai was looking at him worriedly. He must have been noticed that something was wrong when his mother wasn’t looking at him.
Althea looked at the men and when she saw them advancing, casually shoving peoples on their ways. Those people that are seemingly after her easily blended in the crowd, but since Althea already know their faces, she can easily spot them from afar.
But they were getting nearer.
Before Althea could think, she sprinted to the ride’s entrance when it finally stopped. She ignored the operator’s warning yell when she entered inside and directly removed Kai from the horse he was riding. She lifted him up and her son clutched on her tightly, asking what was happening. Content © copyrighted by NôvelDrama.Org.
“Shh,” Althea said to him, then glanced from her shoulder. When she saw that they were nearing by now forcefully shoving people around, gaining some curses and hostile gazes, Althea sped up, bumping shoulders with other people along the way.
She also revied curses, but she let it pass from her ear to the other ear. She was focusing on escaping. To get away from them.
Due to the stream of people, the men that was after them were slowed down greatly, making their distance grow more and more. The one leading the chase stopped, making the other’s also stop from their tracks. The man looked at the running figure of Althea before looking at his men.
He gestured something, and they all nodded. They pulled out their guns.
Those who were near them paled and backed away. When the others noticed that they were all backing away from something, they also turned to look. When they saw that one of the armed men pointed his gun up at the sky, the crowd begun to panic and run away.
“Bang!” The deafening sound of the gunfire made the others screamed.
“AHHH!!!” Screamed echoed.
The crowd run from different directions, clearing the way for them. The children who know nothing about the situation begun crying as their father carry them on their shoulders and arms. In their panic, they still manage to look back to see if the men carrying firearms were aiming at their directions. When they saw that they weren’t, they speed up to escape, not caring about who their targets are.
The targets are in the same panic like them, but more intense as they know the were the people they need to point their guns at.
Althea carefully runs while covering Kai’s head. She was also ducking a little in fear that a flying bullet will suddenly fly on her head or Kai’s.
“Bang!” Everyone flinched with the bang, when they heard a thud of someone falling on the ground, the panic grew stronger.
They shot someone. Someone already died.
Althea paled and without a second thought, she covered Kai’s eyes.
“Mom? What was that?” The little boy asked amidst the roaring yells of the other people.
“Nothing,” Althea replied then casted one last glance to the man who was shot by the bullet instead of her. His companion kneeled down besides him and bawled her eyes out.
Althea’s throat clogged and suddenly her body was heavy. The guilt was weighing her entire existence. Althea can feel the urge to throw up as the smell of blood penetrated her nose. It was so strong, as if it was reminding her that someone died because of her.
Her stomached turned upside-down. She doesn’t want Kai to smell the thick smell of blood. She forcefully turned her heels to run on another direction.
But someone knocked her on her shoulder.
“Ah!” Althea let out a yell when she lost her balance.
Instinctively, she protected Kai’s head with her arms and closed her eyes to prepare for the fall. But no hard floor hit her, she let out another yell when someone snaked their arms on her waist and forcefully yanked her up.
“Come on lady,” an unfamiliar voice said. The voice was next to her ear, the stranger’s hot breath fanning her ears. “Don’t fall down or they’ll stomp you to death.”
After his words, Althea can feel the tug on her arm. He took Kai away from her arms and before she can even panic or react, he pulled her arms and begun to walk rapidly. The stranger was leading them the way. She opened her eyes in shock and looked at the man’s back.
He has a wide shoulders and bulky body. The arm that was holding Kai up was building with muscles and veins. He skillfully avoided the streams of panicking people and the gap of her, and the armed men were getting wider and wider.
Those men still firing their guns, Althea flinches every time it did. She can’t imagine how many people were now dead.
“Hey!” The man tugged her arm forcefully making her train of thoughts stop. “Stop stalling around or they’ll catch up!”
He looked over his shoulder and Althea finally took a closer look. The man was looking at her with irritation. His thick brows were furrowed, and his plump red lips were pressed into thin lines. He has the face that can make the other men jealous.
But none of there caught Althea’s attention.
It was his peculiar eyes. It was an eye with a color that is the same of the moon. A man with silver eyes.
